Levels Of Ayurvedic Healing: From Illness To Wellness

I have decided to do something special from today……Something that can refresh your minds………something that can influence your thoughts and something that can augment your purpose of living………….. Yes! All I am about to do is to share a strong thought of life every day, so that along with Ayurveda, the ‘Science of Life’ you will also learn something that says ‘What Life Is All About?’. To begin with today’s value for life, here comes the first wonderful thought to enlighten you.

The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”.   – Thomas Edison.

How will you call someone who inculcates on your complete wellness? Won’t you feel like calling or comparing that person to your ‘Mother’ even though he/she is not related to you in anyway either through a blood relationship or through friendship at least? For such a special, sturdy and genuine reason, Ayurveda is called as the ‘Mother of All Healing Sciences’. No wonder that even in today’s digital living, this method of holistic healing is the precursor and pioneer of mind-body medication for which it has been identified as the medicine of the future, even before thousands of antique years.

As per Dr. David Frawley’s renowned book ‘Ayurveda and the Mind- The healing of consciousness’, Ayurveda identifies four principal levels of healing. They are:

  1. Disease Treatment: An occurrence of a disease is a clear indication that your body is not working in the exact way it should work. There is something wrong within your arrangement. This is the final stage when the human system needs to be repaired and treated for wellness. The noble science of Ayurveda trusts in healing mankind just in a pure natural way without the use of vaccines, exasperating allopathic medicines, serums, toxic or harmful pharmaceutical drugs and extremely powerful injections with high chemical composition. Ayurveda, the science of simplicity believes in treating illness with the use of a unique healing power in the universe, which is nothing other than ‘Mother Nature’ with the protective and secure Ayurvedic therapies for physical, mental and emotional fitness.
  2. Disease Prevention: The superiority of a healing system lies in that progressive move of preventing the disease along with the treatment. Ayurveda is such a superior way of curing people as it considers that each individual has a unique physical and mental set up. Identifying their Ayurvedic body types or Doshas and guiding them in leading their lives in a methodical way according to an individual’s constitution of mind, body, senses and more (Prakriti) inherited at the time of birth. Each of the three doshas contributes and governs particular functions and Ayurveda teaches and helps one to restore balance between the doshas and lead a resistant life that is free of diseases. Health is an enduring process and Ayurveda educates you in maintaining a uniform order in your lifestyle, eating habits, work atmosphere, psychological and other environmental conditions.
  3. Life Enhancement: Ayurveda has a strong faith in the thought that a disciplined lifestyle with a nutritious diet, use of natural herbs, Ayurvedic essential oils, and Ayurvedic massage therapy along with the regular practice of meditation, systematic yoga and regular exercises is a sure shot way for leading a sustained life with an increased life span. This is how the ancient Ayurvedic practitioners and the followers of Ayurveda helped themselves for living longer with full of positive verve and vitality.
  4. Awareness Development: The eternal and spiritual science called ‘Ayurveda’ does not create awareness about a particular disease or illness just like an AIDS awareness program. It does much more. It makes us understand the real meaning of spiritual freedom and help us realize our stand in this universe. Above all it insists on an amazing fact that the universe is vested within each individual and the way we use our energy and strength gives a real purpose to our lives to carry with. The best way suggested by Ayurveda to gain this awareness is the real quality time you spend for yourself through meditation.

Look at the way that Ayurveda has put up the virtual meaning for a human’s life. Undoubtedly, it renovates us and this power is more than enough to heal humanity and revolutionize one from illness to complete wellness.

Menthol

Menthol solid at room temperature, and is white, crystalline and waxy in nature. It retains its solid state at room temperature and melts slightly above. It is originally found in the form of corn mint, peppermint, or other mint oils, and the organic compound made synthetically from it.

It imparts a minty flavor, fragrance and cooling effect to essential oils it’s seen in.

It is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation, as menthol has local anesthetic and counter-irritant qualities. This makes it very common in non-prescription products for short-term relief of minor sore throat and minor mouth or throat irritation.

It is also used to relieve minor aches and pains, such as sprains, muscle cramps, headaches and similar conditions. It is mixed with chemicals such as camphor, eucalyptus oil or capsaicin to form topical analgesics.

It is also used as an antipruritic to reduce itching. In perfumery, menthol is used to prepare menthyl esters to emphasize floral notes. It is used as a decongestant for chest and sinuses, used to treat sunburns and in aftershave products to relieve razor burns.

Menthol is used in certain cigarette brands as a smoking tobacco additive, which also increases the density of nicotine receptors, making it an addictive potential of tobacco products. It is used in soda to alleviate nausea, in particular motion sickness, by pouring a few drops on a lump of sugar.

A study on ‘Menthol: a simple monoterpene with remarkable biological properties’ stated that menthol can only be found as a constituent of a limited number of aromatic plants, and hence not a prime compound of most essential oils.

This compound is known to show signs of high biological activity in vitro and in vivo, displaying antibacterial, antifungal, antipruritic, anticancer and analgesic effects, and are also an effective fumigant.

Menthol is used in food and in oral hygiene products such as mouth and tongue-spray, mouthwash, toothpaste and more generally as a flavoring agent in chewing gums and candies. It acts as an antispasmodic or a muscle relaxant in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. It is also used in the cosmetic industry in products such as hair conditioners.

A 2013 study on ‘Chemical composition and biological properties of essential oils of Two mint species by Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science and Providence University, published in the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research’ established the effects of menthol against inflammation and microbes.

This study showed that the two mint essential oils contain more alcohol and terpene and the major compound was menthol. The antimicrobial activity of peppermint against E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was stronger than that of chocolate mint.

For the anti-oxidation test using DPPH radical and β-Carovtene-linoleic acid assay, peppermint showed better properties than chocolate mint. However, for the scavenging NO radical activity, chocolate mint was superior to peppermint. Chocolate mint also showed stronger anti-inflammatory activity than peppermint.

Based upon the Gas chromatography report and Material Safety Data Sheet, both the oils of Peppermint and Chocolate mint contains menthol as the primary chemical constituent, responsible for its promising remedial attributes.

Ayurvedic Body Types: Determining The Real ‘YOU’

Ayurveda is an interesting science of life guiding us to learn more about ourselves. It throws light into our unique system and aids us in exploring who we are, what suits us the best and how to live a holistic and comprehensive life?

Ayurveda trusts that the entire Universe inclusive of the human body is made up of 5 predominant elements known as Devanagari, popularly known as ‘Panch Booth, where Panch indicates 5 and Booth stands for the chief elements of the universe namely:

  1. Water called as Jala
  2. Earth called as Prthvi
  3. Air known as Vayu
  4. Sky called as Akasa
  5. Fire known as Agni

According to Ayurveda the human body constitutes of 7 primary elements known as ‘Saptadhatu’ and they are:

  1. Rasa dhatu defines Plasma or Chyle
  2. Rakta dhatu indicates Blood
  3. Mamsa dhatu means Flesh
  4. Medha dhatu stands for Fat
  5. Asthi dhatu means Bone
  6. Majja dhatu stands for Marrow
  7. Sukra dhatu denotes female reproductive tissue or semen

Based upon these elements and its constituents, human body is classified and expressed as the equilibrium of 3 fundamental energies (Dosha) also known as humors or principles of mind and body. Ayurveda uses the 5 primary elements of the Universe to define human body types as a combination of these five elements namely air, water, fire, ether and earth in different proportions within the humors. The Ayurvedic science says that every individual is made up of a unique combination of 3 body and mind principles, creating our explicit physical and mental personality. The 3 major Doshas are:

Vata Dosha: Vata Dosha is a representative of wind and is a combination of air and space (ether) where air dominates. It can be called as the controlling authority of the power vested with our body and it directs the other two doshas. This humor regulates the circulation, function of the nervous system, and the movements of our body along with emotional and bodily development.

Predominant characteristics: When an individual has a chief composition of Vata, he/she will look lean, act faster and stay flexible while being creative, conversational, visionary, artistic and fervent with full of energy. Imbalance of this energy can cause loss of memory, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, fear, dry skin, bloating and few other digestive disorders like indigestion, intestinal gas and constipation.

Pitta Dosha: Pitta Dosha is a blend of fire and water and it signifies bile. With fire being the superior element, Pitta is responsible for all kinds of corporeal actions concerning heat like digestion, creation of energy with the help of hormones and takes care of metabolism, body temperature and absorption.

Predominant characteristics: A proper balance of Pitta upholds intelligence, confidence, competitiveness, glowing complexion and leadership capabilities with a sizzling temper. Pitta disparity can cause jealously, anger, annoyance, disgust and other bodily problems like ulcer, high blood pressure, skin irritation, heartburn and soreness.

Kapha Dosha: With water as the overriding element, Kapha or phlegm is an arrangement of water and earth responsible for connecting bones, tissues, muscles and tendons. It is wholly in charge for the structure of the body by supplying fluid strength to all parts of the body while maintaining consistency, stability, solidity, skin health and proper lubrication of joints.

Predominant characteristics: Kapha balance aids in exhibiting tranquil, trustworthy, lovable and compassionate personalities, generally with hefty body structure. The unevenness of this type will lead to obesity, congestion, lethargic attitude and slow digestion.

Ayurvedic discipline states that the human body is said to be healthy when it strikes a balance between these 3 energy elements and when there is discrepancy, the body tends to become unwholesome and turns detrimental.
